The first thing you should do is find a proper blogging platform. There are many of these, with all kinds of different features, but we recommend self-hosted WordPress.org. It’s the biggest and easiest platform for blogging and it allows you to design your blog with ease. Simplicity is key here.

Free blogs have tons of limitations and downsides but self-hosting a blog on your own domain allows you to fully own your blog. That’s why you should seriously consider self-hosting on your own domain. 1. Step: Start A blog by Choosing A Profitable Blogging Niche
What is a niche exactly?
A blog niche is a specific topic you’ll write (or create other types of content) about on your blog.
Now, the problem is everyone has a different idea of what a “specific” topic is.
One of the first blogs I worked on was a video game blog. We worked on it heavily for a few years and struggled to grow it.
Here’s where we messed up:

So, what was the lesson in all of this?
When you decide on your blog niche, you need a clear understanding of who your target audience is.
Here’s what I mean:
Instead of writing for anyone that was into gaming, we needed to get specific about our ideal audience.
The gaming industry is massive. If we just carved out a small chunk of that, it would have been incredible.
So instead, we could have picked a specific type of game and owned it.
Therefore find your interest and choose a blogging niche, in which you think you can do well.
Or Brainstorm to find your topic
Following is a process that can help you determine which niche is best for you:
- Make a list of your interests or hobbies. Which topics fascinate you? List them all, for instance: golf, fishing, yoga, playing games or cooking.
- Next, list accomplishments you are proud of, such as musical talent, artistic talent or sports achievements.
- Now, list difficulties you have overcome or defeated, such as: losing a significant amount of weight, recovering from a financial setback or managing a disease.

3. Step: Pick A Domain Name
A domain name is your website name. It is the address where Internet users can access your website. Your domain name will be the name by which you will be known online, no matter what niche you choose. 4. Step: Get A Web Hosting Account, Start A Blog
After choosing a domain name, selecting reliable hosting services will be one of the most important decisions you make. Set up your web host account

You should start by selecting your plan. If this is your very first one, you should go with the basic one – at least until you explore your options. The one called plus should be able to cover all your needs once you get going, and you should consider the pro version once your popularity skyrockets.
I prefer the Plus (a.k.a. Choice Plus) plan because it has more unlimited features and includes domain privacy. Domain privacy keeps your personal contact information hidden from the public and who doesn’t want that?
If you choose a different plan, you can add domain privacy later for a fee.
Enter the Domain Name You want to use
Or, skip this step and choose later (super handy!).
Your domain is your web address. For example, AmyLynnAndrews.com is my domain name.
If you’re not sure what domain to use, or your first choice domain is taken (very common), click the link at the bottom to easily choose one later. Otherwise, enter a new domain, or one you already own in the appropriate box. (Entering an existing domain won’t connect it yet. It’s only used to identify your Bluehost account for now.)

Set up your Bluehost account. Sign in with Google or enter your contact info manually. Either works.

I uncheck the rest of the boxes.
Complete your purchase
Enter your payment information, review the Terms, check the box, hit Submit.
Create your account and set a password
This is the password to your Bluehost account, not your WordPress blog (that will come via email)
Log in to Bluehost
Use the password you just created. Or sign in with Google.
Start creating your blog
After you are logged in, Bluehost dashboard will appear.
look for the marketplace option and click it. Next, select the add website and click it.
Enter the name of your blog and a tagline if you have an idea. If not, you can easily change it later.
Finish the survey questions. You may be asked about the type of blog you’re starting or how new you are to blogging. Neither locks you in.
Skip any free themes. Unless you are familiar with a theme listed, skip this step (link at bottom). Why? Because many free themes aren’t kept updated, leaving holes in your site’s security. It’s not worth the risk. Choose a better theme later. I’ll show you how.
Congratulations, you have a self-hosted WordPress blog!
From here, I click the WordPress button so I can configure important settings in the WordPress Dashboard which we’ll do next.
5. Step: Get started with a WordPress blog
At this point, you should have two sets of login information (sent via email):
- WordPress, where you write your posts and manage your blog.
- Bluehost, where you manage your hosting account and pay your hosting bill.
You can log into your Bluehost account at Bluehost.com, but from this point, we’ll spend most of our time in WordPress.
Note: To log in to your WordPress Dashboard, ad wp-admin at the end of your URL. E.g, https://www.mrdecode.tech/wp-admin/ This will redirect you to WordPress login page.
Customize your WordPress setting
Before we begin customizing, I would congratulate you for creating a successful blog.
In the Dashboard Area look for the settings and click it, you will see a list of sub-settings. Click the general setting. Here, you can enter your site title, site tagline, WordPress URL, site URL and admin email etc.
Here are some of the most important areas:
- A – This area is where you’ll actually write and manage your blog posts
- B – This area lets you create a different type of content called a “page”. This is good for stuff like about and contact pages
- C – This is where you can control how your blog looks using a “theme”
- D – This is where you control how your blog functions using “plugins”
6. Step: Choose a WordPress theme ( how your blog looks)
A WordPress theme dictates how your blog looks and, to a smaller extent, some parts of how your blog functions. It’s like your website’s clothing. And, just like you can’t go out in public naked, your blog needs a theme to function.
Your blog will come with a default theme, but most people want to choose their own theme to make their blog their own.
Here’s the good news:
Because WordPress is so popular, there are thousands of free and premium themes to choose from.
Here are some of the best spots to find themes:
- WordPress.org – This is the official WordPress theme directory. It includes thousands of free themes.
- ThemeForest – This is a popular marketplace that contains thousands of premium themes.
- StudioPress – This is a great provider of premium themes. I’ve used a bunch of their theme’s over the years.
While some people will try to scare you into paying for a premium theme, there’s nothing that inherently makes a premium theme better than a free theme.
Premium themes often have better designs and features, but that’s not universal. So, if you’re on a tight budget, feel free to get started with one of the free themes from WordPress.org or the blog post I linked to above!
How to Add a free WordPress theme ( start your blog)
In the appearance menu, select the theme option. Click the add new button on the top left corner. It will lead you to free premium wordpress.org theme directory.
Click the install button to use the theme. You can also install and preview the theme before activating it.
Once you install your theme via either method, make sure to click the Activate button to make it live on your website!
How to customize your theme to make it your own
Once you activate your chosen theme, you can take things a step further and actually customize it to make it your own!
Most themes now support something called the Customizer. With the Customizer, you can modify your theme using simple options in a live sandbox. That is, you’ll be able to see the changes to your blog in real-time, but those changes won’t be made live until you Publish them.
To access this area, go to Appearance → Customize in your WordPress dashboard:
Feel free to play around and get creative with all the available settings because you can’t break anything!
Two areas that you’ll especially want to pay attention to are the Widgets and Menu
- Menus – Let you set up your site’s navigation menu so people can easily find their way around your blog.
- Widgets – Let you add cool functionality to your blog’s sidebar, like a list of your latest blog posts.
Choose some WordPress plugins (Start a beautiful blog)
Whereas themes are mostly about appearance, plugins are all about functionality. They let you add pretty much anything, from a simple contact form to an entire eCommerce store!
And, unlike themes, you can use as many plugins as you want (though you should try to only use plugins you absolutely need).
You can find both free and premium plugins for your site.
Here are some good places to look to get you started:
- WordPress.org – This houses the official free plugin directory with over 50,000 different plugins to choose from.
- Code Canyon – A popular marketplace for premium WordPress plugins.
The plugins that every single blogger needs (Start a BLOG)
While there are plenty of plugins that offer niche functionality, there are also certain types of plugins that pretty much every single blogger needs.
Here are some list of important plugin that you need to install.;
- Backup plugins (UpdraftPlus)
- Page builder plugins(Elementor)
- Mailing list & opt-in form plugins(Optin Monster)
- Social media sharing plugins(Social Warfare)
- SEO plugins(Yoast SEO)
- Contact form plugins(WPForm)
- Security plugins(Sucuri Security)
- Performance plugins(WP Fastest Cache)

How to install WordPress plugins
To install WordPress plugins:
- Go to Plugins → Add New in your WordPress dashboard
- For free plugins you found at WordPress.org, search for the plugin by name and click Install Now
- For premium plugins, click Upload Plugin and upload the ZIP file
Once you install a plugin, make sure to Activate it. Then, you can read the plugin’s instructions for how to actually use the plugin on your site.
Create some essential blog pages
Phew! We’ve made it. Now, you’re finally ready to start creating content for your blog.
But before you jump into writing your first blog post (that’s next!), it’s a good idea to create some core pages.
Unlike a post, a “page” has no publish date. It’s just something that’s always there.
At a minimum, most blogs have pages for:
- About – This tells visitors what your blog is about, as well as a little more about yourself.
- Contact – A surprisingly large number of readers will want to contact you. Your contact page makes that happen.
You might have more information that you want to share – but those two pages provide a good baseline to give readers the information they need.
How to create a new page in WordPress
To create a new page:
- Go to Pages → Add New in your WordPress dashboard
- Enter the title of your page in the top box
- Enter the content of your page in the text editor
- Click Publish when you finish
Write and publish your first blog post
And now for the super fun part – you’re finally ready to write your first blog post and share your thoughts with the world!
Creating a blog post in WordPress is almost identical to creating a page. There are just a few tweaks.
First, head to Posts → Add New. Then:
- Enter your blog post title at the top
- Enter your blog post text in the editor box. You can use the formatting toolbar if you need to add bold, italics, and more. It’s just like Microsoft Word!
- If needed, click the Add Media button to upload and insert images
- Choose a category or add a new one on the right
- Optional – add some tags that describe your blog post on the right

There are a ton of blogs out there nowadays, so if you want to start a blog that stands out, you’ll need to create content that stands out.
Here are some quick-hit tips for writing content that people want to read:
- Write a catchy Title or Headline; The headline determines whether audiences will read the rest of your work. If the headline doesn’t spark interest, stir an emotion or make the reader want to learn more about the topic, you simply won’t achieve the desired results with your content.
- Add Subheadings to break the page; Formatting is crucial for blog posts. there’s nothing worse than reading a blog post that’s just one giant paragraph. ost of the time people skim through the content before they actually decide to read it, so I always recommend breaking your article with subheadings.
- Use Bullet Points; Since we know that people skim before they read, you need to make sure to highlight your best information. Aside from subheadings, bullet lists are perfect because they’re very easy to skim through.

Here are some tips that I use to write bullet points that people will actually read:
- Express clear benefit. Think of bullets as mini-headlines.
- Keep your bullets symmetrical. 1-2 lines each.
- Avoid bullet clutter. Don’t write paragraphs in bullets.
- Remember bullets are not sentences. They’re just like headlines
- Optimize for SEO; While I never recommend writing for SEO, but I also don’t recommend writing without SEO in mind. organic search drives a huge chunk of the traffic for most websites. But if you want to increase your SEO ranking, then I highly recommend that you optimize your blog post for important SEO ranking factors.
- Use the keyword in the Title tag.
- Add the target keyword in the first 200 words.
- Write Long-form content.
- Insert LSI keyword in the body, instead of keyword spamming.
- Insert infographics, images and video to increase engagement.
- Add your keyword in the meta description.
- Connect with your Audience; A great blogger will also connect with an audience through their similarities and interests. You should get a strong idea of your target demographic (age, location, hobbies, income etc.) and create content that appeals to them. If you’re creating content that you know your readers will want to read, you’re well on your way to becoming a successful blogger.
8. Step; Optimize your website speed
- Use a Content Delivery Network (CDN); A content delivery network is a set of web servers distributed across various geographical locations that provide web content to end-users with regard to their location. When you host the website on a single server, all users requests are sent to the same hardware. For this reason, the time needed to process each request increases. On top of that, the load time increases when users are physically far from the server. With CDN, user requests are redirected to the nearest server. As a result, the content is delivered to a user quicker and a website works faster. This is a rather expensive, but quite effective way to optimize the load time.
- Optimize the size of images on your website; Everyone loves eye-catching images. In the case of successful eCommerce sites, images are the vital part. A lot of photos, images, graphics on your product pages improve engagement. The negative side of the image use is that they are usually large files that slow down a website. The best way to reduce the image size without compromising its quality is to compress images using such tools as ImageOptim, JPEGmini, or Kraken. The procedure may take a bit of time but it’s worth it. Another way to reduce the image size is to use the HTML responsive images <secret> and <size> attributes that adjust image size based on user display properties.
Plugins and caching option to boost your site speed ( Start a blog)
- Reduce the number of plugins; Plugins are common components of each website. They add specific features suggested by third parties. Unfortunately, the more plugins are installed, the more resources are needed to run them. As a result, the website works slower and also security issues can appear. As time passes, the number of plugins grows, while some of them may not be used anymore. We recommend checking out all the plugins you have installed and deleting unnecessary ones.
- Use website caching; In case there are a lot of users accessing the page at one-time servers work slowly and need more time to deliver the web page to each user. Caching is the process of storing the current version of your website on the hosting and presenting this version until your website is updated. This means that the web page doesn’t render over and over again for each user. A cached web page doesn’t need to send database requests each time. They find the advertisers for you and all you have to do is place the Google Adsense code on your blog to start running ads. An advice for all beginner bloggers
At times blogging can be overwhelming. But if you keep your head up and keep your goals straight you can surely succeed at it. And if you ever feel like giving up just remind yourself, why you even started this journey in the first place.
I have already said and suggested enough.
I will just leave you with one of my favourite quotes from Steve Jobs –
“…if you look closely, most overnight successes took a long time”
It takes a lot of time for “a blog” to become “a successful blog”.
So, have patience and never give up on what you’ve started.
Besides, if you want to see how it ends you gotta have to start someday. Why not today?
Just have faith and make your 2019 be the successful year of all.
